Project Title: Determining the Possible Antibacterial Effects on Staphylococcus Epidermis and Staphylococcus Aureus by Various Chemical Agents
Description: Staphylococcus Epidermis and Staphylococcus Aureus were used to determine the antibacterial effectiveness of various chemical agents. The agents were chosen by determining items commonly used for cleaning human skin and killing germs, mostly various types of soaps and herbs. Two separate experiments were conducted to verify this, both involving the measurement of zones of inhibition on agar plates using each of the agents. Known antibacterial agents, Ampicillin, Trinaethoprim Sulfamethoxazole, and Cefaclor, were seen to have effects in nearly all of the trials. Most of the remaining substances had little to no effect in inhibiting bacterial growth, except for antibacterial soap and hand sanitizer which stopped bacterial growth in some cases. This means that the non-antibiotic agents do not have any direct effect on bacteria when used, but more likely are used to simply wash away the bacteria if they have any effect at all.

Project Title: Farm Feeding Practices: Exploring Solutions for Environmental Sustainability
Description: This exhibit examines cattle feed from different farms in Jefferson County to see which is most environmentally friendly. This was done through a series of field and lab work. First, water was collected from different water bodies running through the farm areas of which the feed was received. These samples were then tested for phosphorus and biological oxygen demand levels. The results were then correlated to the unbound phosphorus levels (bio-available phosphorus) measured from the various cattle feeds that were tested earlier from the farms. As a reference, we also conducted a positive and negative control test with high and low phytate feeds. Based on the results received we were then able to conclude which farm contained the healthiest feed for the environment.

Project Title: CO2 Emissions Filtration System Using Lithium Hydroxide and Sodium Zeolites: Phase III
Description: This project’s mission is to find an economical way to reduce carbon dioxide emitted from vehicle exhaust using a newly engineered muffler along with the lithium hydroxide and sodium zeolites filters. The overall idea is three part: create a simpler way for all vehicles to prevent emitting carbon dioxide, help older vehicles become environmentally friendly by installing the new muffler system, and create a simple filter that everyone is able to replace without the need of a mechanic. The project goal is to attain a consistent reduction of CO2 from vehicle exhaust without the use of excess amounts of chemicals. My hypothesis is that using sodium zeolites and lithium hydroxide will yield a greater reduction than 22.9%. Also, the regeneration of the sodium zeolites will be at different times then the degeneration of carbon dioxide will be reduced by the LiOH filters. Using a reengineered muffler, filters were created out of air filter material that fit inside the redesigned muffler. The filters were tested for 3 minute intervals collecting data using Vernier CO2 and O2 probes. The result of this phase was that the chemicals NaY and LiOH had a lower reduction of CO2 than LiOH alone. While testing the pure NaY in all of the filters the results were higher O2 levels and consistent levels of CO2. The hypothesis was up held in the reduction being greater than 22.9%. The conclusion of this project is that the chemicals LiOH and NaY do reduce CO2 from vehicle exhaust. Though there was no consistent reduction of CO2, graphs show a slow rise until consistent.
