Project Title: Impact of allelic diversity of Wx and ALK genes on the nutritional characteristics of rice and the evaluation of rice starch biosynthesis in the hybrid Y58S male sterile breeding line
Description: Rice (Oryza sativa) is the world’s most important cereal crop for human consumption. Hybrid rice, characterized by high yield, has made great contributions to safeguarding food security in China. However, hybrid rice shows poorer grain quality in comparison to conventional rice. With the development of improved living standards of people in China, a better understanding is needed of the factors that contribute to the grain quality and nutrition of hybrid rice. In this study, a molecular marker-based genetic analysis looks at the three main determinants of rice eating and cooking quality (ECQ) – amylose content (AC), gel consistency (GC) and gelatinization temperature (GT) – in conjunction with allelic variants of two genes, Wx and ALK, known to play a role in ECQ. The outcome confirms that the AC is controlled mainly by Wx locus, and also indicates that GC is controlled by Wx gene or by one locus tightly linked to this gene. Similarly, the ALK locus was shown to play a major role in regulating GT. We also report the successful introgression of the elite Wx gene into the key male sterile line, Y58S. The improved line should immediately improve nutritional status for China and countries around the world.

Project Title: From Grass to Gas
Description: This project is a series of experiments to answer the question: can yard grass clippings be made into fuel? I researched an enzyme called cellulase to help in the fermentation process by catalyzing the hydrolysis of cellulose, to make cellulosic ethanol. I performed four experiments to see if ethanol could be made from grass and to discover the ideal fermentation process of grass. My hypothesis was: if I vary the amount of cellulase and yeast in a grass and water mixture, then I will be able to get an ethanol concentration, up to 10%, without expensive equipment and excessive chemicals. To test this hypothesis, I designed a procedure in which water, grass, cellulase, and yeast were added to a fermentation container. My first test involved monitoring the amount of glucose in the grass mixture each hour. It was proved that cellulase increased the concentration of sugar until the microbes began fermenting. Next, grass samples with and without yeast and cellulase were compared. I concluded that the grass needs cellulase to ferment but yeast is optional. Another test involved closed vs. open containers. Closed containers produce twice as much ethanol as opened containers. The last experiment showed that the yield of ethanol changed with added cellulase. I concluded from this trial that the concentration of ethanol is directly proportional to the amount of cellulase added. From this set of experiments, I concluded that yes, it is possible to create ethanol using yard clipping, few chemicals, and inexpensive equipment.
