| Effect of Equine Coat Colors on Fly Behavior
| Description:
| My exhibit is about fly behavior around different equine coat colors. Several studies have shown that horseflies tend to avoid zebra coat patterns. I wanted to know if the same thing would happen with the flies that are common in Iowa. My hypothesis was that the flies would avoid the zebra coat colors, but my results showed that a dark equine coat color actually caught the fewest flies. This information can help us know how to dress ourselves and our animals to avoid getting pestered by flies.

| Description:

This year’s project focuses on determining a concentration of M. oleifera leaves required to adequately purify water at varying turbidities without over-treating. By using only the minimum amount of crushed leaves required to obtain purified water, the leaf supply can be saved for other uses. A scale will be designed to aid in purification of contaminated water at varied turbidities.

| A Comparative Study of Radon Levels in Lee County II
| Description:
| My project is about radon levels and how they vary around Lee County. Radon is a radioactive element found in the soil, Iowa has the highest radon levels in the U.S. This can seep into basements as well as drinking water and affect human health; radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the world. I tested cement basements and ground water wells in the Lee County area. When I got my results back I found that the location of the basement did not matter, what mattered was how well the basement was sealed. I had results from less than 1 and up to 40; the EPA recommended level is 4. I did this project to educate people and encourage them to get their homes and wells tested for radon.
