Project Title: Drosophila: A New Model for Studying Nuclear Actin
Description: My research examines the differences in length and frequency of the nuclear GFP-Actin rods produced by the expression of Actin-5C, −42A, and −57B during Drosophila oogenesis. This research also attempts to study how the cellular stress of aging impacts the formation of nuclear GFP-Actin rods produced by the three proteins. As nuclear actin rods are likely to be similarly formed and regulated in all contexts, these studies will help provide a better understanding of the role of nuclear actin rods in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s .

Project Title: The Effectiveness of Moringa oleifera in Purification of Turbid Water Phase III
Description: Through my previous year’s research I discovered that freshly crushed Moringa oleifera leaves purified extremely turbid water (1140 ntu). This year’s project focuses on determining a concentration of M. oleifera leaves required to adequately purify water at varying turbidities without over-treating. By using only the minimum amount of crushed leaves required to obtain purified water, the leaf supply can be saved for other uses. A scale will be designed to aid in purification of contaminated water at varied turbidities.

Project Title: A Comparative Study of Radon Levels in Lee County II
Description: My project is about radon levels and how they vary around Lee County. Radon is a radioactive element found in the soil, Iowa has the highest radon levels in the U.S. This can seep into basements as well as drinking water and affect human health; radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the world. I tested cement basements and ground water wells in the Lee County area. When I got my results back I found that the location of the basement did not matter, what mattered was how well the basement was sealed. I had results from less than 1 and up to 40; the EPA recommended level is 4. I did this project to educate people and encourage them to get their homes and wells tested for radon.
