We are pinning the finalist medal onto the kids. It indicates the student is a finalist. Each year a student attends ISEF as a finalist they receive a finalist medal. Years ago, we decided to make it a thing the morning of judging, the teacher/mentor will pin the medal to the finalist. We call it the pinning ceremony. From talks with other directors across the country we are the only group that I am aware of that does it. It is just a special moment for the teacher/mentor and the student.
