Project Title: The Effects of Urbanization on Hairy Woodpecker and Red-headed Woodpecker Populations in Cedar Rapids
Description: The hairy woodpecker and the red-headed woodpecker are both bird species residing in Cedar Rapids. Although they are both woodpeckers, the hairy woodpecker is experiencing an increase in its population in Cedar Rapids, while the population of red-headed woodpeckers is declining. This study examined the causes of these differences in population growth, primarily through the use of data concerning woodpecker and tree populations, and Census data. The results indicate that urbanization is a factor in the rise in hairy woodpecker populations and the decline in red-headed woodpecker populations. The hairy woodpecker has adapted to living in wooded towns, farms, and cities, where they visit feeders. The red-headed woodpecker, on the other hand, resides in woodlands and farmlands with scattered trees, especially in areas with mast-producing trees. Due to Cedar Rapids’ rising population of citizens and Iowa’s decline in the population of mast-producing trees, such as oaks and hickories, the hairy woodpecker population has benefited while the red-headed woodpecker population has suffered. The results of this study illustrate the need for Cedar Rapids to examine the effects of its urbanization on bird populations, and urbanize in a way that accommodates its birds.

Project Title: A Comparative Study on Ion Exchange Capacity of Soils with Different Fertilizer Application Practices Phase II
Description: Last year I looked at Ion exchange capacity rates in three different types of soil: a field in which corn was grown and an inorganic fertilizer was used; a field in which soybeans were grown and and inorganic fertilizer was used; and a field with not crops and has not had any inorganic fertilizer, herbicide or pesticides used on in for the past decade. For this project, I am taking the “virgin” soil, exposing it to different fertilizer and organic applications to determine the rate of ion exchange.

Project Title: What is the limit?
Description: Over the past year, it has been noticable that the mental health of teengers has been steadily declining. We have both noticed a change in the behavior of our peers, not only with school performance, but socially as well. Because of this observation, we decided to conduct our own research and see first hand what has been the root of the decline of tennagers mental health. Our hypothesis was that because COVID has impacted all of us one way or another, it would be the main factor. However, after researching and viewing countless mental health surveys, and sending a certified phq9 survey and a survey that we formulated ourselves, we saw that school is in fact the main factor of the decline of mental health.
