Virtual Summer Research Opportunity (April 27, 2020)

We received the following announcement from the Summer STEM Institute:

Hi,

Hope you have been staying safe and healthy. My name is Dhruvik, and I’m an undergraduate at Stanford. In high school, I participated in various science fairs, and in 2018, I received the Young Scientist award at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

With many summer programs and research opportunities cancelled due to COVID-19, many students I know have been left without summer plans. To continue educational opportunities during this time, I’m working with a team of science fair alumni to start a virtual high school research program to teach students how to conduct remote research projects with only a laptop and WiFi connection.

The Summer STEM Institute (SSI) is a six-week virtual summer program for high school students. Taught by Harvard and Stanford graduates and teaching assistants, SSI consists of three main parts:

  • A research and data science bootcamp: Students will learn how to design and conduct data science research projects. Students will also learn valuable computer science and presentation skills.
  • A Masterclass lecture series: Students will be connected with 30+ highly accomplished speakers from Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and other top institutions — from Forbes 30 under 30 awardees, Intel Science Talent Search (STS) winners, to International Math Olympiad Medalists.
  • An independent research project: Students will also have the opportunity to conduct a research project in a scientific field of interest. Students will be matched to a virtual lab and mentors, including International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) winners and Research Science Institute (RSI) scholars.

We have reserved 20 full-tuition scholarships for students who cannot afford to pay full tuition, in addition to our broad financial aid policy. More information can be found on our website here: https://www.summersteminstitute.org/.

Competing in science fairs changed my life and opened the doors to so many opportunities, and I hope to share these opportunities to make research and mentorship more accessible to high school students. I thought that students involved with EISEF might be interested in the program. Could you share this opportunity with your fair’s students and parents?

Thank you, and take care!

Summary of the 2020 Fair (March 29, 2020)

EISEF 2020 took place as the COVID-19 pandemic was disrupting the United States.

We were supposed to hold our Fair on March 21; COVID-19 disrupted us like everybody else. Here’s the Fair’s actual timeline:

  • March 11: SSTFI (the Iowa state science fair) announced that, “The State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa will be making arrangements to conduct portions of the fair online, while other portions will be cancelled.” Students would participate by posting a video of their presentation online for judges to watch and critique.
  • March 12: We decided to follow suit.
  • March 16: Iowa Governor Reynolds ordered all schools to shut down for 4 weeks to slow the spread of COVID-19. This isolated the science-fair students from their teachers and the facilities in their schools — which made it harder for them to record their presentations and upload them to the internet….
  • March 17: We began to accept student presentations online.
  • March 23: ISEF 2020 was cancelled entirely. Now we couldn’t reward our Senior Champions with a trip to ISEF; we had to decide on something else.
    • We stopped accepting student presentations at 11:59 PM; in total we had about half as many students as in a normal year.
  • March 24: We told our judges to start watching the student presentations and to submit scores for them. We had to encourage them several times over the next 3 days….
  • March 26: We stopped accepting judges’ scores at 11:59 PM.
  • March 28: Our Finalist Judges interviewed the Senior Finalists by video conference and picked our Senior Champions — who won’t get to go to ISEF in May….
  • March 29: We closed the judging for our Sponsored Awards and announced our who would receive which awards.
  • March 31?: We mailed the award prizes, checks, and certificates to the adult sponsors; they’ll distribute the awards to their students.

It was tough for us and the students to move EISEF online like this — but we all rose to the challenge.

Meet our 2020 Senior Champions.

Dasia Taylor, Iowa City

Meena Ramadugu,
Cedar Rapids

Shristi Sharma, Fairfield

We named them Champions, but we can’t give them the exciting trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Anaheim in May. Curse you, COVID-19!

Statistics:

  • 129 students presented their 103 exhibits.
  • They came from 20 schools.
  • 86 judges watched and scored their presentations.
  • They received 132 awards in all.

In the meantime, visit the Video Presentation List?. There you can watch the finalists’ video presentations. You might learn something about science, and about how to improve your own science fair project for 2021.

Clean Tech Competition announced (March 25, 2020)

EISEF Fair Director received this email today:

I am reaching out to you today in your role in the Eastern Iowa Science & Engineering Fair. I am the administrator of the Spellman HV Clean Tech Competition, a sustainability focused research competition for 15–18 year olds. Our event is a wonderful opportunity for students to show off their research in sustainability and I would love to see contestants from your Fair enter! Below is a summary blurb that can easily be passed on to students and teachers, has all our contact info, and I have attached a flyer as well.

The Spellman HV Clean Tech Competition is looking for any 15–18 year old with a solution to slow our resource drain, and as we are all virtual until our July Finals, we are still moving ahead!! If you are or know a student looking to address this international issue with innovative engineering and a revolutionary design, this is the Competition for you! In 2020, the Competition is challenging you to help us Reduce Individual Impacts, whether they be in areas with Abundant Resources, or Limited Resources. Contestants research a specific solution to this problem, register for free online in teams of 1–3, and then submit a 5–15 page paper to be judged by an international team of engineers, university instructors and industry professionals! Registration ends on April 10 and papers are due by April 12, so do not delay! The 2020 Finals event is set to be held on July 2nd in Washington, D.C., where Finalist teams will present their research and constructed prototypes as they vie for the $10,000 per category grand prize! For more information, visit www.cstl.org/cleantech, and feel free to reach out the administrator at cleantech@cstl.org or by phone at (516) 764–0045.

We are not planning on any disruption to our event at this time as it is all done remotely until the Finals in July! Please do not hesitate to contact me about any questions, by either phone or email. I hope to see teams from your state join us this year!

Best,
Kevin Sanders

Regeneron ISEF 2020 Cancelled (March 24, 2020)

While this decision disappoints us on the Eastern Iowa Science and Engineering Fair Board, we agree with the International Science and Engineering Fair that it’s for the best.

Of course, our biggest prize has always been sending our champions to ISEF. We will find another way to recognize them in this pandemic, and we will let you know when we do!

Dear Fair Directors & Fair Contacts,

The Society for Science & the Public and Regeneron are deeply disappointed to share that, based on our comprehensive evaluation of guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control related to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair 2020, scheduled for May 10–15 in Anaheim, California.

The health and wellbeing of everyone who attends our events is always our top priority. Given the unprecedented travel restrictions, government recommendations and protective measures being taken across the world, the Society and Regeneron believe the most responsible decision is to cancel this year’s Regeneron ISEF and avoid gathering thousands of people and students from around the world.

These are challenging and unprecedented times, and we share in the sadness of our finalists who looked forward to meeting and competing with their peers from around the world. We applaud the leadership of the fairs around the world who in the last several weeks have had to make equally hard decisions to cancel, postpone or pivot to managing a virtual experience for their students.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who collectively dedicated thousands of hours of their time along with their energy and passion to ensure that Regeneron ISEF would be an amazing experience. This includes the fair directors and parents, Regeneron and all of our sponsors, the Orange County Local Arrangements Committee, the hundreds of volunteers and judges, our many vendors and partners, and of course our staff.

Regeneron ISEF is a cancellation and not a postponement or a virtual judging experience after much thought and consideration. This decision was made with an awareness that many of our affiliate fairs were not able to be held and we did not want to hold an event that left out a significant portion of our community. Likewise, we were concerned with the equity of virtual judging experience across time zones, languages and access. Regeneron ISEF is an experience that goes beyond the boundaries of the judging interview process. It is a cultural and scientific exchange of people and ideas and experiences across 6 days that we believed we could not properly represent.

We do want to acknowledge and honor the students who have been named finalists. We now consider them members of the Society for Science & the Public’s alumni network. In the coming days, we will look at how else we might recognize their accomplishment in becoming a Regeneron ISEF finalist.

Please visit the Society’s website at www.societyforscience.org for our full statement and more information.

We look forward to healthier and happier times and to Regeneron ISEF 2021.

Be well,

Michele C. Glidden

EISEF 2020 Judges’ Briefing (March 24, 2020)

Welcome to EISEF 2020!

Thank you for joining us here online in the year of COVID-19 and agreeing to judge our students’ video presentations.

How is this year different from other years?

Here are the final project counts by division:

JB15
JP12
JT16
SB37
SP22
TOTAL102
  • We have about half as many projects as in a normal year.
  • Over half of them are seniors, the inverse of normal.
  • All you have to judge them by is their video presentations and photos of their display boards. You can’t talk to them, ask questions, or ask them to slow down or speak up.
  • And worst of all, we can’t even offer you donuts, fruit, coffee, or iced drinks.

Thank you for your dedication!

The judging process

Deadline

All scores are due by March 26, 2020 at 11:59 PM.

How to prepare

  1. If you’re new to judging at EISEF, watch our Orientation/Training Video.
  2. Read our Judging Guide, even if you’re a veteran EISEF judge: we’ve completely rewritten it for 2020.
  3. Review the Judging Score Sheet. You’ll be filling out this form as you evaluate the projects.
  4. Find the Video Judging Form?. That’s how you’ll submit your scores to us when the time comes.
  5. You shouldn’t evaluate the projects for the quality of the videos. You need to judge the student and the science project, not the camera work.
    1. The students are making them in an emergency, in trying circumstances. With the schools closed, many students are cut off from their adult sponsors and from the resources at their schools.
    2. Some students are better at making videos, or still can use resources that the others can’t.

Judging a project

  1. Select, watch, evaluate a project.
    1. Print a copy of the Judging Score Sheet.
    2. Visit the Video Presentation List? and select a project to judge.
      1. Write the exhibit and the student name(s) on the score sheet.
    3. Click on the links to bring up the video, the poster board, and the student photo.
    4. View the presentation; review it, if you like. Carefully look over the poster and the data on it.
      1. Useful tip: In the YouTube Video link is a CC button on the bottom right. Click it, and you turn on auto-generated closed captioning of the presentation. It works surprisingly well.
    5. Based on the presentation and poster, fill out the score sheet.
  2. Submit your score to us using the Video Judging Form?.
    1. Your name identifies you, so we can credit you for judging this year.
    2. Your email address also identifies you. Also, the form will send you a receipt for the score to that address.
    3. The project’s exhibit number, from the Video Presentation List?.
The student name(s) are just to help you confirm that you’re selecting the correct exhibit number.
    4. Your score for the project and presentation.
    5. Constructive comments for the student(s).
See the Judge’s Comments to Exhibitors for examples of what you might say.
    6. Proofread your data.
    7. Submit the form.

Possible questions

How many projects should I judge?
Aim to judge 6 projects, more if you have time. After all, you have 3 days instead of just 3 hours (as in normal years)….
I’m judging Junior Physical, with only 12 projects. What if I run out interesting JP projects?
Well then, judge some uninteresting projects, or pick some in a different division.
Without the Wall Charts, how can I tell which projects are covered and which need my attention?
Every student deserves to be properly judged. Observe the Score Count column on the Video Presentation List?, and pick projects that have low counts or zero. We will monitor the progress of the judging and take measures to even out the Score Counts.
What sorts of projects should I avoid?
We want to avoid the appearance of favoritism. So don’t judge students you know, or from your home town, or where you live now. This page will tell you the students’ school and city.
How can I judge all my projects consistently?
You should pick all your projects, view each of them, and mark up a score sheet accordingly — without submitting the score. This should give you some perspective, so you can judge the projects consistently against each other. Then you can review the projects (if you need to), revise your scores, and submit them. In a normal year you have barely 3 hours to judge all your projects, so you can’t work this way; this year you have 3 days, so you can.
Can you mail me a 2020 EISEF pin?
It’s impractical (costly, time-consuming) to mail a pin to each of you individually. If you come judge at EISEF 2021, we’ll have 2020 pins available for you. Call it an incentive to come back.

EISEF is finally accepting video presentations (March 17, 2020)

Students: Our Video Submission Form? is finally ready. Visit it and follow the directions to submit your video presentation to us. Our our judges will view the presentation, evaluate it, and and give it a score.

We’ll announce the results by Saturday, March 28.

EISEF moves project judging online (March 13, 2020)

Overview

In 2020, we’re holding EISEF online, where the COVID-19 corona virus can’t get us, you, or the judges. You’ll upload a video of you presenting your project; our judges will view the video and evaluate your project. We’re handling this mostly the same way as the State Fair (SSTFI); in particular, you’ll send us the same YouTube link that you sent to SSTFI.

One key difference: We will accept video presentations from both senior and junior projects.

We’re still deciding how to announce the award winners and get their physical prizes to them. When we figure it out, we’ll let you know via a newsletter.

Submitting your project video online

Adapted (with permission) from SSTFI’s “Senior High Virtual Project Submission”

DUE: March 23rd, 2020 by 11:59 PM

Please read and review the directions carefully.

  1. Review the Judging Score Sheet and use it to help guide your presentation video. Work to address all of the scoring components. The judges will be filling out this form as they evaluate your project.
  2. Record your video.
    Video Guidelines:
    • The video should be no longer than 10 minutes.
    • Check to make sure that you, and the information on your poster, are clearly visible in the video.
    • Conduct an audio test before filming to ensure the judges will be able to hear you clearly when they review your video.
    • Include the following content in your video:
      1. Introduce yourself (and your teammates, if applicable)
      2. State the title of your project
      3. Answer the question: What sparked your interest in this research?
      4. Overview your research question, design/methodology, data collection, analysis and interpretation as it applies to a science project, as well as construction and testing as it applies to an engineering project.
      5. Answer the question: What further research steps might be done to advance your research?
  3. Upload your video to YouTube. Check with a parent/guardian/teacher as needed for permission. Set the video to unlisted and copy the shareable video link. Check video permission settings to ensure judges don’t run into issues with viewing your video from the link you provide. If you have questions, follow this link for a tutorial on uploading an unlisted video to YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go_HDCANWf8
  4. Visit our Video Submission Form? and answer all the required questions.
    1. Paste your YouTube video link in the submission form.
    2. Upload a photo (.jpg) or PDF of your poster.
    3. Upload a photo (.jpg) of you (and your teammate) at your exhibit. We will include it in EISEF’s 2020 Photo Album.

Our judges will view your video from March 24–27. We will share the results after that.

EISEF goes virtual because of COVID-19 (March 12, 2020)

Due to increasing concerns regarding the COVID-19 (corona virus) outbreak, the EISEF board of directors has made the difficult decision to cancel our in-person science fair previously scheduled for March 21, 2020. We’ve decided to hold an online science fair; now we’re working out how to make this happen. Please stay tuned over the next few days for updates on how judging will proceed.

Register your project for EISEF (February 9, 2020)

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Read the For Students And Teachers page and follow its directions.
  • Check the Forms Guide to find out what forms and certificates you need to fill out and when.
  • Finish your experiment and complete your paperwork.
  • Visit the ProjectRegistrationForm, follow the link, fill out the form and submit it.
  • Send us copies by email of your Student Entry Signature Page and all your other paperwork. The deadline is March 2, 2020.
  • Check the status of your entry on the Status of Student Entries page.
  • Bring the originals of all paperwork with you to the Fair on March 21, 2020.

What about the statewide registration system?

In December EISEF withdrew from the statewide system, for 2 reasons:

  1. We asked SSTFI to add to their registration system, to meet our needs. By December it began to look as if the additions wouldn’t be ready for 2020.
  2. We realized that even with our additions, the result would be unsatisfactory: unwieldy, hard to use, hard to fix when problems arise.

We withdrew with a heavy heart. Iowa’s adult sponsors have (understandably) been pleading for a single science fair registration, to reduce their workload. In the past two years, the website maintainers at SSTFI and EISEF have worked hard toward the statewide system. It was an exciting dream, but it’s not to be, anytime soon.

2020 Advancing Science Research Teaching (ASRT) Program (February 7, 2020)

We received the following announcement from ASRT:

Advancing Science Research Teaching (ASRT) is a Science Research/STEM outreach program that aims to increase access, capacity and quality of Science Research/STEM education programs. The ASRT program will equip high school teachers with the knowledge, insights and skills to grow, strengthen or start their Science Research/STEM program providing high school students with in-depth, challenging science research opportunities to conduct hands-on research under the mentorship of professional scientists.

The ASRT Program is being offered for free thanks to funding from Regeneron.

The research teacher(s) in each of the five (5) schools selected, will receive one-week of consulting sessions customized to help them overcome obstacles and reach their goals. It is possible for a few local high school Science Research teachers to share this week-long workshop. While applying, there will be an opportunity to identify the other teachers in the application. However, each teacher must apply separately.

The program will be facilitated by 30+ year science research teacher veteran, founder of the award-winning science research program at Yorktown High School in NY and founder/director of the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF), Michael Blueglass.

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their interest in building and/or growing such a program, readiness and capacity in terms of finances and faculty, as well as their administration’s level of support for this program.

Each workshop would run at or near the high school for four and a half days in the summer. A possible schedule would be Monday to Thursday from 8:00am-3:00pm and Friday from 8:00am-12:00pm. In addition, ASRT teachers will receive continued support via phone and email throughout the school year.

Teachers can apply online using the link below. More information about the ASRT Program and Regeneron can be found in the beginning of the survey.

Please remember that online application deadline is Monday, March 2nd at 11:59 pm (Pacific Time).

Teachers that have applied will receive an email regarding whether or not they were selected as a recipient of the ASRT workshop in early April.

Thank you in advance for applying or forwarding this to teachers you think may benefit from this opportunity. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the ASRT Program Director.

Partnership Hopes to Advance Student-Led Research in Pork (October 11, 2019)

We received the following announcement from the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation:

Des Moines, Iowa — October 3, 2019 — The Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation and the Iowa Pork Producers Association are announcing a new program to encourage more students to get involved in swine and pork science research. Iowa students who complete and conduct a science experiment that is related to pigs, pork, pig production, swine care, or in a related subject area will be eligible to receive a $200 scholarship.

Today’s pig farmers and pork producers use a lot of science to determine how to best raise their animals. Good science can help propel the industry forward and allow pork and pork by-products to continue to be an important part of the food supply and agricultural industry. Iowa ranks #1 in pork production.

“We are excited to offer this research opportunity to students,” said Joyce Hoppes of the Iowa Pork Producers Association. “Our industry relies on science for advancement in animal care and product improvements.”

The scholarship can assist students in the development of a project, be used to purchase supplies for their experiments, or purchase supplies for the presentation of the project. The funds can also be used to help fund travel to any of the four science fairs and symposiums hosted in Iowa including:

  • the Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (March 2–3, 2020 in Iowa City, IA);
  • the Western Iowa Science and Engineering Fair (March 14, 2020 in Fort Dodge, IA);
  • the Eastern Iowa Science and Engineering Fair (March 20, 2020 in Cedar Rapids, IA);
  • or the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa (March 26–27, 2020 in Ames, IA).

“Students can complete a research project in any of the more than 70 categories,” said Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation executive director, Will Fett. “There are so many interesting connections between pork and science that students can explore. Everything from biomedical and health sciences to mathematics and microbiology can relate to pork and swine.”

Ten students (grades 6–12) will be selected to receive the scholarship. The deadline to apply for the scholarship will be February 1, 2020. Students selected to receive the scholarship and their teacher or sponsor will be contacted by February 15, 2020.

For more information about this activity or other education activities please contact the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation at . Students can apply for the scholarship and begin their science research by visiting https://www.jotform.com/IowaAgLiteracyFoundation/sciencepork2020.
